The most important thing is to have top quality, unique content if you want long term traffic from search engines. You want to attract repeat visitors that will also tell others about you. The information on your site must have informative, keyword-rich, useful content that enables both search engines and people to find it.
Spend time thinking of different ways to provide useful information to visitors and you’ll automatically start building free one-way links back to your site because of its high quality. It’s also vital to keep adding fresh, relevant content as often as possible. Add at least one article per week as a bare minimum. Do it daily if you can.
The more often you add fresh information, the more chances are that your site will be found because each new addition prompts the search engines to find you again. Use lots of different words and phrases that can be targeted when people search. Not every visitor will become a customer, but some of them will. Others may return if your site is a useful one. If they see your site time after time when they search, then they’re more likely to become a customer.

Offer freebies if you can. Also offer reciprocal links so that your links appear on other sites, which helps boost your site’s ranking in the search engines.
Post free ads on notice boards with links back to your site. They can attract lots of people who haven’t necessarily been looking for what you have to offer, but as they see your link, their curiosity gets piqued.

These are all very solid tips. I like to use article marketing as a traffic producer, especially for my sales pages. It seems like it is a lot harder to get traffic from forums lately as they have increased the standards for being allowed a signature. Also, blogging seems to be on the downslope. If you are creative and can think “outside the box”, then you can always come up with new ways to drive traffic. Great article.
This is a nice article Mal,it cannot be over-emphasized that Content, Content and more Content is the key to a successful internet business. A good thing basicly promotes itself, and everyone wants to associate with a good thing. So when you write good unique content and then contact coleagues in related niche for links, they will want to link to you, Ofcourse why not? It increases the credibilty of the site owner when he is able to direct his readers to really helpful information. So make it your aim to provide good content and look for people in your niche to work with (link to you). Like i said before when something is good, it sells itself, if i read an article and i find it useful, i will want to associate with such it by linking to it and i believe in quality not quantity. The fact that blogs require regular updates have made people just write rubbish or re-write what thousands have written just to fill their site with content. If you have ideas on unique content to write everyday, please do, but if you don’t, then you don’t have to write everyday, like Mal said you can write once a week but make sure when you write it makes sense and it provides value, which is really it, providing VALUE. It’s when you honestly help people with your content that you make money
Article marketing is a very good way to get traffic, but most people take it forgranted (including me) but it’s really good. I don’t have much believe in forums but i think we can still give it a try.
Guestblogging is another great way to get good traffic, posting articles on other people’s blog. But this is not common because it’s always difficult to get through to site owners
The best free way of getting traffic remains GETTING ON THE FIRST PAGE OF SEARCH ENGINES! Well, that’s a dream
Good tips. I agree that quality, relevant content will build one-way links to your site, and those are the type you want if you want to rank well in the search engines.
Another good way to build good links and get some new traffic to your site is to do some guest blogging on blogs that are in/related to your niche. You can get some new targeted visitors to your site.

Getting traffic to go where you want is difficult enough, getting targetted traffic is even harder, put getting targetted traffic that returns again and again is the real key here.
Once you are able to offer them a good reason to return to your page (by giving away good free content) then you have a real chance of making that sale!

Thank you for the very interesting article, I am new to the world of websites and SEO and alot of articles I have read before talk of backlinks and more backlinks and some of them pretty underhand ways to get them,I have always thought when I started out to create a website that content must be the most important element as if people dont like the content of a site they will move on instantly however optimized for search engines it is.
The tips and help from this article and Karo`s comment have restored my faith, I shall now follow the information and tips from here.

Thank you Katie for your comments. Backlinks are crucial in building web presense and search engine positioning which is fine for first time visitors and quick profits.
For example, you may make a quick buck from Google adsense or affiliate links pointing to other sites – even from a site with crappy content.
For long time profits though it is important to have some good content on the site to keep visitors coming back.

Mal, My favorite strategy to build traffic is, “using long tale keywords in titles”. Usually i use less competitive but laser targeted keywords for converting. That really helped me so far but it also depend on website model too. If you’re website is product/service specific, this strategy can’t really help. (Ideal for adsense kind of sites.)

Definitely a great strategy Joel and one I have used myself. I actually wrote a report on combining this method with blogging and social bookmarking to great effect. I called it the blog and bookmark method.

All start with a piece of content and if is original way much better. Then you can use it as an article, newsletter, blog post, video share, podcast and so on.
SEO takes a little more time to drive traffic but the good thing is totally free.

Forum posting is a very powerful method to drive traffic, i have had pretty decent traffic to one of my sites in computer and technology niche. But you need some patience initially with it. Also, you shouldn’t promoting your sites too much. You got to be using your signature to do the promotion and make valuable posts.
