Invest in your Career, Become Self Employed


Starting a business is both exciting and financially rewarding.  The process for getting it up and running however can be a bit challenging, but with proper planning, research, passion and commitment to reaching your goal, you’ll have your virtual business up and running in no time. 


A major challenge that some virtual business owners often find themselves in is that he/she will begin the investment process of (starting their business) and because they don’t see an immediate financial return, the excitement level for getting the business up and running begins to dwindle.   


How can you position yourself to overcome this challenge and get down to the business of building your business?  Below are ten surefire ways to help you build a successful virtual business. 


1: Ensure that starting a business is the right career move for you.  What do you have to offer (product or service) that others will be interested in purchasing (Be honest with yourself).  Take a long and hard look at your skill sets, knowledge, capabilities and finances. 


2: Make certain that there is a market large enough to support your business over the long-haul (you can only know this information by doing your research).

The Power of a Written Thank-You Note

Winning clients over with a simple thank you…

Thank you!  How many times have you said these two simple, but wonderful words to the clients who have supported your business? Are they repeat clients? Do they continue to support your business when they’re in need of your product or service? Or, have you been so caught up in making money that you’ve forgotten to tell your clients thank you?  If so, shame on you. 


It seems amazing, but it’s true: Sending a simple thank-you note to a client who has just solicited your business for the first time can wield considerable power and influence, and reflect very favorably on your company for future purchases. Why? Several reasons: 


By sending a thank-you note, you show your clients common courtesy and respect.  


Unfortunately, in our information-overloaded, busy and often impolite world, we simply don’t acknowledge each other’s time, efforts and patronage. So in sending a thank-you note, you tell your client in no uncertain terms that you appreciate and value the time he/she has taken to patronize your company. After all, they (your client) had to give up all or part of their day to learn about your business and the products or services you have to offer. 


So few new business owners send thank-you notes that you automatically stand out if you do. It’s shocking, but many new business owners fail to send thank-you notes particularily to new clients who are patronizing their business for the very first time. Why? Who knows? But the bottom line is that you wind up in a position to shine (above your competitors) simply by putting forth the effort of sending a thank-you note. It’s strange, but true. 


A thank-you note gives you (the virtual business owner) an opportunity to speak to your client directly and even more important personally. Have you ever wished you’d more strongly emphasized a particular product or service your client seemed to be looking for? A thank-you note gives you the chance to do just that. After using the first paragraph of your note to thank your client, you can use a brief second paragraph to touch upon key points of which are of interest to your client (example: discount sales, special holiday sales, etc.). 


A thank-you note demonstrates your written communication skills.


In receiving and reading your thank-you note, your client will see firsthand how you handle yourself on paper. Clients also get to see firsthand that customer service is an important aspect of your business practices and that there are real people (behind the scenes) who understand the importance of building long-term relationships. 


Writing thank-you notes isn’t terribly difficult or time-consuming. If you’d like some ideas on how to write a thank you note, I recommend investing in the wonderful book titled:


“How to Say it” by Rosalie Maggio, a must have in your virtual office library. Then, be sure to follow through, preferably the same day a client patronizes your business. It can have a much bigger impact than you might think — perhaps even the difference between that client becoming a repeat customer or soliciting the products or services of your competitor.

Locating telecommuting friendly companies

Telecommuting, telework, home-based work programs, virtual work programs, job share, virtual employees, virtual companies, virtual teams.  What is all the hype about working virtually?  Are these companies with home-based programs or telework programs, legitimate?  If so, how can you learn more?  And, which telecommuting friendly companies should you keep a close watch on?   


Do any of these questions sound familiar? Sure they do.  According to a recent Consumer Survey conducted by The Dieringer Research Group, The number of employed Americans who performed any kind of work from home, with a frequency range from as little as 1 day a year to full-time, grew from 41.3 million in 2003 to 44.4 million in 2004, a 7.5% growth rate. – Source: 2004 American Interactive Consumer Survey  


The group also stated in yet another survey, Teleworkers who worked at home during business hours at least one day per month increased in the past year from 23.5 million to 24.1 million, a 2.6% increase.  Of that 24.1 million, 16.5 million are self employed, a 4.4% increase over 2003. This 24.1 million represents 18.3 percent of employed adult Americans, nearly one-fifth of the workforce. - Source: 2004 American Interactive Consumer Survey 


So, how do you locate these companies offering flexible work programs?  I took a little trip on the world wide web to do a little researching of my own and the first thing I noticed was that to conduct this type of research could take a person hours.  So, if you’re up to it, grab your favorite fruit juice and happy researching.  However, if you prefer not to reinvent the wheel, below is a list of some of my findings. 


For the most part, these companies either have or intend to implement some form of flexible work program, either telework or home-base or who knows they may call it some other name.  The key is to learn who the companies are, begin your research about the company; establish initial contact (this will most likely be by email or with someone in Human Resources).   


Tip 1: be sure to have your resume in ready-for-submission status (in the wonderful event, you’re asked to submit it).


Tip 2: create a telework contacts communication folder in both your email inbox and office filing system, to keep track of who you contacted.   


It’s very important to stay on top of this research once you get a routine established, and finally, don’t forget to follow-up.  People (especially HR Managers) are inundated with resumes, emails, and phone calls all day, everyday.  So to keep your name fresh in their mind, follow-up about 2 times a month and don’t forget your manners, show your appreciation for their time by sending a hand-written “Thank You” note card (makes your thank you more personal).

Running a Christian home based business means incorporating Christian values into normal business operations.  When people work with you as a Christian home based business owner, they expect that you will be living up to higher expectations.  Yet, just because you are a Christian home based business owner, you should not let people walk all over you.  Understanding that there are Christian values in setting limits and running a successful business will help you build a strong Christian home based business.

Sit down and think about what your Christian values are and how you want to incorporate them into your Christian home based business.  It is okay to want to make a profit, as long as money does not rule what you do.  If you looking at customer service in your home based business, you want to promote a Christian ethic of treating customers how you would like to be treated.  Remember, consumers are looking for you to exhibit the best Christian values in your Christian home based business.


Once you have your values listed, you also want to set your goals.  Do you want to use your business just to make a living, or do you have a higher purpose?  Is your Christian home based business going to be a witnessing tool or is being a Christian home based business more of a reflection on upstanding standards?  What kind of profit do you want to make in your Christian home based business and how do you want to get there?  Make both short term and long term goals and be sure to have a way to assess how you meet those goals.

When Hurricane Katrina and Wilma struck the U.S., lives were lost, property and businesses destroyed, resulting in billions of dollars in losses. However, there was one home business that the hurricanes could not destroy.

Among the many people affected was home business owners who saw their life’s work washed away in the torrent. However, there was one home business that the hurricanes could not destroy. While Katrina and Wilma raged on, ONLINE BUSINESSES were still running and making money!


 


Online business owners did lose their equipment and belongings in the hurricanes, but they DID NOT lose their source of income, unlike so many other home business owners. Since their businesses were operating in cyberspace, they were safe from the ravaging hurricanes. In a worst-case scenario, even if the owner did perish in the hurricane, their online businesses could still carry on, bringing in passive and residual income to their family.


 


When I started my websites a few years ago, I didn’t really consider this aspect (since there are no hurricanes where I live). I basically wanted a business that would make money even while I was sleeping, but when Katrina and Wilma raced across Louisiana and Florida, I suddenly realized my websites were Hurricane-proof Money Making Machines! Not only were they hurricane-proof, they were earthquake, SARS, bird-flu and natural-disaster-proof! Now that’s what I call FANTASTIC! It took some effort in the early stages and money was nowhere to be found at first, but as I continued to plug on, I began to see results and I believe, so can you! So if you want a home business that will keep on making money despite human and natural disasters, consider starting an online business.


 


Here’s a short list of the types of online businesses you could set up :


 



  • Sell your own physical product. This is probably the most difficult to get off the ground. Unless you already have an established customer base and your online presence is there to add value to your business, it could take years to build such an online business, but having an online store brings you business from all over the world, something a small physical store can’t possibly do.

  • Sell your own electronic products. Being an Infopreneur (Information Entrepreneur) is really easy these days. There are millions of people promoting their e-books, software and training programs online. You don’t have to be an Internet genius to sell your stuff online. All you need is to be knowledgeable in a specific niche and build your products around that niche. There is BIG money to be made in this!
     

  • Sell an online service. People will pay a subscription fee to be allowed into the subscribers section of your website to use these services. The types of services you could offer are limited only by your imagination and technical know-how.
     

  • Sell other people’s products. This is called affiliate marketing. It’s the most popular because you don’t incur development costs. There are literally millions of products to choose from, and the beauty of this online business is that you can sell to anyone, anywhere in the world – there are NO borders!
     

  • Selling advertisement space on your website. This has always been a good money maker. One of the easiest ways to make money this way is the Google Adsense program. You need to paste a small snippet of code in your web pages which will then display advertisements based on your content. Every time a visitor clicks on one of these ads, you earn anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars (depending on how competitive the ads are).

The list above doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the thousands of ways to make money online. How you make your money is really up to you.


 


I love having an online business! It’s like having a sales representative in every home or office around the world (that’s billions of homes and offices, mind you) and they never need a vacation, never fall sick, never ask for a raise, never complain and always do what I want them to do! I don’t have to worry about visitors not coming to my store because of bad weather or because their car broke down or any other physical reason. I’m with my customers as soon as they click their mouse!


 


Sure, there are millions of websites raking in the big bucks and my sites could be considered small fry, but the online business pie is BIG and it’s growing everyday. There’s lots of room for everyone to make money! Depending on where you live, just a small slice of this pie (or even a few crumbs) could allow you to live comfortably! An example would be if you were an online business owner living in Malaysia (where I am) where every 1000 US dollars equals 4000 Malaysian Ringgit, and that’s a lot! And remember, you won’t have to pay a single cent of what you earn to board up your store windows, repair the roofHealth Fitness Articles, pump out the water and clean out the mud from your online business when a storm or hurricane comes.
